Departed Brethren, departed Benefactors, and an Archangel

No one was away and we had no visiting Brothers this week. Our aspirant from Glasgow, Scotlant, continues his visit to explore what it might be like to be a Holy Cross monk.

On Tuesday, we remembered our departed Brethren and departed Benefactors throughout the day's liturgy. After mass, we processed to the columbarium and then to the cemetary to bless the departed Brothers.

Blessing the departed Brothers in the cemetary. From top left, clockwise: processing to the cemetary from the columbarium; Br. Robert James, our Superior, blessing the tombs; the West Park brothers around the tombs; Br. Robert James sprinkling holy water on the tombs (Br. Aidan who presided the preceding Eucharist and Br. Randy behind the Superior).

On Wednesday, Br. Robert James, our Superior, and Br. Robert Leo, our Assistant Superior, attended the luncheon offered by the Bishop of New York for leaders of religious communities present in the diocese, at the diocesan offices in Manhattan. The Rev. Matthew Wright who lives with his wife Yanick alongside our community went with them, representing the Rivendell Community.

On their way back from NYC they picked up Associate Zachary Roesemann and an icon he has painted for the monastery. The next day, Zachary's husband, Clark Anderson came to the monastery to ceremonially present the icon with Zachary to the monastery. The icon was blessed during the day's Eucharist. It was hung in the St Michael chapel (the crypt of our church). It is a powerful and serene rendition of this holy defender. We are grateful for Zachary's gifts as an icon painter and thankful for Zachary and Clark's gift of this beautiful icon.

And then there are the angels we keep meeting in the monastery amongst our guests and volunteers.

And on Saturday mornings, one could wonder whether one is hearing an angelic choir echoing from the North end of our monastic library. That is where "Kairos, a consort of singers" rehearses their music. Their next performance at the monastery will be Advent Lessons and Carols on the third Sunday of Advent. This is a ticketed event on December 12. You can reserve a spot on Kairos' website.

Peace and all good to you.
